The Scoop on FEWnet

Greetings, FEWnet friends!

There are many themes of discussion that are percolating around our FEWnet community these days. The economy, workplace morale, and healthcare and tax reform are being discussed as actively in our small groups as they are in the headlines.

If you've been craving good conversations like these, then make sure to save our Annual Spring Event date on your calendar today: Wednesday, May 26, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Contrary to our fall technical panel which was created to help engage you technically, this spring event is meant to touch you personally with a compelling keynote speaker and plenty of time for networking. Full details can be found in this issue’s Announcements section, so make sure to save the date today!

As we head into 2010, I encourage you to join your fellow FEWnet friends by “getting out of the bunkers.” Make it a point to see things with a new perspective and find the fun in networking. These actions are at the heart of FEWnet, so please take advantage of our 1200+ person community and let me know if I can help!

Take care,

Sally Mainquist, CPA

FEWnet Member Spotlight

“Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can - there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did.” - Sarah Caldwell, American opera conductor and impresario

Cindy Sattler, CFO and COO of Lawrence Merchandising Services, is the pure embodiment of the term life-long learner. From receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of North Dakota, to her MBA at the Carlson School nearly 20 years later, we are convinced there is simply nothing this active FEWnet member cannot do.

In her current role, Cindy oversees Operations, Finance, HR, Marketing, Legal, and IT; a broad role that fits her past experiences perfectly. Starting her career at Honeywell in the Controller side of the house, Cindy credits her movement to Treasury as being a pivotal moment in her career. She later followed the ATK spinoff and continues to have a strong appreciation for the investment they put into training and developing their employees. Later positions included Assistant Treasurer, VP of Finance, and CAO roles with Polaris, Video Update, and HomeServices of America. It was at HomeServices that Cindy got her first taste of a position wearing many hats and came to a defining realization; maybe she wasn’t just a CFO anymore.

The Work/Life Balance Sheet

Based on what I have learned by building a company over thirteen years that insisted on work/life balance for its employees, I continue to be more than a little confused by how many people in business believe that an employee who is always at the office is the best employee for their team. (I think we’re enabling “workaholism,” but that’s another column.)
