The Scoop on FEWnet

"If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain." – Dolly Parton

Dear FEWnet friends,

The buzz all around us is that we’re living and working in challenging times but there is light on the horizon as shared by this month’s FEI speaker, Jim Paulsen, Chief Investment Strategist at Wells Capital Management. Many of us left his talk feeling more optimistic than we had in days and so I wanted to pass that positivity along to our FEWnet friends. Here is just a snapshot of what he had to say:

  • The fear level is exaggerated. Confidence is key to getting the market to move.
  • Wall Street has been flat the last 3-4 months, showing increased stability.
  • Cash assets to total debt are the highest in 48 years.
  • Historically, rapid declines in the market have led to equally robust recoveries.

The point being, we can recover quickly. In the meantime, investing in our network is more important than ever. If you only add one networking event to your calendar this summer have it be our annual FEWnet party on Thursday, June 4. Sally Smith, President and CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings, is this year’s keynote speaker. Her journey from public accounting to industry is an interesting one and her lessons learned along the way will provide great fodder for discussion throughout the night. Delicious food and a fantastic wine selection completes this great networking night out. More information will be coming soon but I encourage you to save the date today!

We all know of someone in transition and it’s a good time to reach out and help each other. Creating a LinkedIn profile and actively using are great ways to stay connected to others in our industry. Find me on LinkedIn. I would love to get connected! Join a FEWnet small group if you can make the monthly commitment. Attend one of this quarter’s events found in the Announcements section - Certes’ way of helping those in transition. The light in the tunnel is that a down market provides the nudge we often need to develop new skills and brush off that address book. Now is the time to make sure you’re in the loop!

Your young staff members can also benefit from the power of networking by joining Nextworking by Certes (www.nextworking.com). Nearly 1,000 young finance and accounting professionals in the first 10 years of their careers take part in fun social events that we host throughout the year. The next event is in April and I assure you that they will have a great time while making good industry connections along the way.

Take care,

Sally Mainquist

“Pick the day. Enjoy it -- to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come... The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present -- and I don't want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” – Audrey Hepburn

Jane Bortnem is the Vice President of Finance for Cherry Tree Companies, a financial advisory firm offering investment banking, investment management, and family office services to entrepreneurial leaders and successful families. In her current role, she oversees 10+ operating companies/investments funds, while managing administrative personnel and shared services in addition to playing the role of Chief Compliance Officer to a broker dealer and an SEC registered investment advisor.

Jane began her career as a staff accountant for a private manufacturing company before holding roles as an auditor and audit manager with Boulay, Heutmaker, Zibell & Co. Joining Cherry Tree over eight years ago, she found her biggest challenge to be knowing very little about the investment world before moving into the industry. Fast forward to today and Jane has shown her ability to rise to the challenge, being named a 2008 Top Woman in Finance by Finance and Commerce newspaper.

A Lesson in Fortitude

Recently, there was a survey done of $50,000 to $100,000 income earners. Results showed this group needed twice as much as they currently earned to feel satisfied. Interestingly enough, $30,000 income earners thought they made enough. I think there is a lesson to be learned about fortitude here!

Donnie Deutsch’s show, the Big Idea, says this is NOT the time to try to live out our financial dreams. In the good times, he interviewed successful entrepreneurs. His message now?  “Humble” and “middle class” are the new black! That takes the pressure off.  “Keeping up with the Jones” just turned into spending less than them.
