The Scoop on FEWnet

"As a leader in today's world, we are taught to show our invulnerability but what makes us vulnerable is what connects us to each other." - Marilyn Carlson Nelson, 2008 Best Places to Work luncheon keynote

Greetings FEWnet friends,

Earlier this fall, I was fortunate enough to get to join some of you in celebrating our state's leading employers at the 2008 Best Places to Work awards lunch. Special kudos go to all winners, especially companies with FEWnet members, including: Capella Education Company, Certes Financial Pros, CresaPartners, Ecolab Inc., HealthEast Care System, LarsonAllen, Merrill Lynch, Securian Financial Group Inc., SPS Commerce, Wells Fargo, and Winthrope & Weinstine.

I'm also excited to read about the accomplishments of so many of our FEWnet members in the news, including the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal's Women in Business, CFO of the Year, and Finance and Commerce's Top Women in Finance. If you missed the news, check out the Members on the Move section in this month's issue.

Each of the keynote addresses at these awards lunches were full of inspirational words, stories of leadership, and a common thread of connection. FEWnet was created with that very need in mind - to create connections among leading women in finance and accounting. If you have not joined one of our small groups, I encourage you sign up today! These monthly conversations provide valuable networking opportunities and the chance to share challenges and receive feedback with other likeminded professionals. Small group members also have the ability to share dialogue in our LinkedIn group and at our small group socials. Many members have formed strong bonds, going outside of lunches in order to share time at open houses and quarterly happy hours. If you are on a wait list, rest assured that we are in the process of launching new groups before the end of the year!

Take care,
Sally Mainquist
President and CEO (and active FEWnet leader)

Karen's Corner

Having It All Without Doing It All

I gave a speech on work/life balance to women executives at a leading public company in town and what I learned that day sticks with me. I asked the group to brainstorm how to save more time at home. Over and over again, the focus went to cooking and cleaning. Is that all there is in the way of us having the lives we want? I actually think, to a large degree, yes.

I began to wonder, is lack of services the problem? With a little research, I found house cleaners and healthy meal preparation were only a phone call away!
